Navien NPE-A2 -- The Gold Standard in Tankless Water Heating

The Navien NPE-A2 is our most installed and most recommended tankless water heater for Long Island homeowners. It combines Navien's advanced condensing technology with a built-in recirculation pump and 0.5-gallon buffer tank, delivering near-instant hot water at every faucet in your home without the typical wait time that comes with other tankless systems.

With an energy factor of up to 0.97, the NPE-A2 wastes almost nothing. It heats water only when you need it, eliminating the standby energy losses of traditional tank water heaters. For most Long Island families, that translates to 30% to 40% lower water heating costs compared to a conventional tank heater.

At All Island Comfort, we specialize exclusively in Navien products and have installed hundreds of NPE-A2 units across Nassau and Suffolk County. We handle everything from the initial site assessment through final testing, and every installation includes a condensate neutralizer, PVC venting, gas line connection, and full system configuration.

The NPE-A2 is available in four sizes -- 150,000, 180,000, and 199,900 BTU -- so there is a model for every household, from a one-bathroom apartment to a four-bathroom family home. Each size shares the same compact 17.3" x 27.4" footprint and mounts on the wall, freeing up the floor space that a traditional 40 or 50 gallon tank heater would occupy in your basement, utility closet, or garage.

Navien backs the NPE-A2 with a 15-year heat exchanger warranty, 5 years on parts, and 1 year on labor. With proper annual maintenance -- including heat exchanger flushing and filter cleaning -- the unit is designed to last 20 years or more. That is roughly double the lifespan of a conventional tank water heater, making the NPE-A2 a strong long-term investment for Long Island homeowners.

Why the NPE-A2 Is Our Top Recommendation

Built-in Recirculation Pump

The NPE-A2's integrated recirculation pump and 0.5-gallon buffer tank keep a small amount of hot water ready at all times. When you turn on a faucet, hot water arrives in seconds instead of the 30 to 60 second wait that is common with other tankless systems. You can set the recirculation schedule to run during peak usage hours to save energy.

Industry-Leading Efficiency

At up to 0.97 energy factor, the NPE-A2 converts 97% of the gas it burns into hot water. Traditional tank heaters typically achieve 0.60 to 0.67 energy factor, and even non-condensing tankless units only reach 0.82. That efficiency difference adds up to significant savings on your Long Island utility bills month after month.

NaviLink Wi-Fi Control

Connect your NPE-A2 to your home Wi-Fi and control it from anywhere using the NaviLink app. Adjust water temperature, set recirculation schedules, receive maintenance reminders, and monitor system diagnostics from your phone. If an error code appears, you can check it immediately without going to the unit.

Affordable PVC Venting

Because the NPE-A2 is a condensing unit, exhaust temperatures are low enough to use standard PVC pipe for venting -- no expensive stainless steel required. PVC venting runs up to 60 feet (concentric) or 150 feet (two-pipe), giving our installers flexibility to place the unit where it works best for your home.

ComfortFlow Technology

Navien's ComfortFlow system uses the internal buffer tank and a built-in mixing valve to eliminate the "cold water sandwich" effect -- that brief burst of cold water between hot water draws that affects some tankless systems. The result is consistent, comfortable water temperature every time you use a faucet.

15-Year Heat Exchanger Warranty

Navien stands behind the NPE-A2 with a 15-year warranty on the stainless steel heat exchanger, 5 years on all other parts, and 1 year on labor. Professional installation by a certified technician (like our team at All Island Comfort) is required to keep the warranty valid.

NPE-A2 Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the NPE-A2 different from the NPE-S2?

The biggest difference is the built-in recirculation pump. The NPE-A2 includes an integrated pump and 0.5-gallon buffer tank that delivers near-instant hot water at your faucet. The NPE-S2 offers similar efficiency (0.96 vs 0.97) but the recirculation pump is optional and sold separately. If instant hot water matters to you, the NPE-A2 is the better choice.

What size NPE-A2 do I need for my home?

For 1-2 bathroom homes, the NPE-150A2 is typically sufficient. For 2-3 bathrooms, the NPE-180A2 or NPE-210A2 works well. For 3-4+ bathrooms or homes with high simultaneous demand, the NPE-240A2 at 199,900 BTU and 11.2 GPM provides the most capacity. Our technicians will measure your home's actual demand during a free site assessment. Call (631) 591-2289 to schedule.

Does the NPE-A2 require a condensate neutralizer?

Yes. As a condensing unit, the NPE-A2 produces acidic condensate (pH 3-5) that must be neutralized before entering your drain system. Long Island building codes require this. We include condensate neutralizer installation with every NPE-A2 installation at no additional charge.

How much does a Navien NPE-A2 cost installed?

NPE-A2 installation starts at $7,900 installed, which includes the unit, gas line connection, PVC venting, condensate neutralizer, electrical connection, water lines, full system testing, and warranty registration. The final price depends on the unit size and any additional gas line or venting work your home may need. We provide free on-site estimates with transparent pricing. Financing is available starting at 0% APR through Wisetack.

Can the NPE-A2 be installed outdoors?

Yes, the NPE-A2 can be installed outdoors with an optional outdoor installation kit. However, for Long Island's climate with cold winters, indoor installation is generally preferred for this model. If outdoor installation is important to you, the NHW-AE Series is specifically designed for outdoor use with built-in weatherproof housing and freeze protection.

How long does NPE-A2 installation take?

A standard NPE-A2 installation typically takes 4 to 6 hours. If you are converting from a traditional tank water heater, it may take 6 to 8 hours due to gas line modifications and new venting runs. Our team completes the work in a single visit, and your new system will be fully operational before we leave. Learn more about the full installation process.

What maintenance does the NPE-A2 need?

Navien recommends annual maintenance that includes flushing the heat exchanger with a vinegar solution (about 45 minutes), cleaning the inlet water filter, inspecting the PVC venting, and checking the condensate neutralizer media. Our repair and maintenance team handles all of this and can set up a recurring service schedule after installation.

Does the NPE-A2 work with propane?

Yes. The NPE-A2 is available in both Natural Gas (NG) and Liquid Propane (LP) configurations. The LP version requires different gas pressure settings (11.0" WC vs 3.5" WC for natural gas), which we configure during installation. Both versions deliver the same performance and efficiency.
